About Tropical Plants

Like their name suggests, tropical plants originate from the tropical regions. This means that these plants grow best in very warm and humid conditions but this does not mean that you cannot create your own tropical paradise if living in an area with a temperate climate. On the contrary, many tropical plants grow indoors very well, while some can even tolerate the frost and be planted outside. It may be hard to imagine a palm tree for instance, surviving the snow and severe frost but it can, of course, if it is frost-tolerant.
Whether you would like to grow tropical plants indoors or outdoors, you can easily find them at just about every florist shop as well as many supermarkets and garden supply stores. It is also worth to check your local magazines for instance, because many people often donate tropical plants due to lack of space or other reasons. However, first you need to decide what kind of tropical plants would you like to grow. Most of them are marked by large and highly decorative foliage, while the others have colourful and beautiful flowers. There are also tropical plants that have both highly decorative foliage and adorable flowers. Then you need to decide whether you would like to grow it as a houseplant or would you like to create a unique tropical garden outdoors, surrounding perhaps your new teak garden furniture. In the first case, you can choose just about every tropical plant you want because most of them grow very well indoor with minimal care. However, if you would like to grow tropical plants outdoors you should be very careful in selection. Although there are tropical plants that are resistant to frost, most of them cannot tolerate winters in temperate regions. You can create an outdoor tropical garden with plants that are not resistant to frost but only if you are prepared to move them indoors before each winter.
Another thing that should be taken into account before bringing home a tropical plant is its size. It may look cute in a pot when bought but it can easily grow into a big nightmare if you do not pay attention to its size when reaching maturity. Plant size is especially important if you want to keep it indoors but the plant’s size should be also taken into account if you plan to grow it outdoors during the summer and keep it indoors during the winter months. Large palm trees for instance, are not only inconvenient to move around each year but they also take a lot of space for storage.
Tropical plants are gorgeous but it is also important to keep in mind that some are poisonous if eaten, while the other can cause skin irritation. So before you get too excited about a particular plant, you should check if it is poisonous especially if having younger children or pets. Children and pets normally do not eat decorative plants, however, ingestion is not impossible. Take yourself some time to decide whether it is worth to take the chance or choose a plant that is not poisonous.
